Christian Eriksen nets for the third successive game as he helps Brentford to a surprise win over his old rivals Chelsea.
Eriksen's first goal for Brentford, after scoring two during the international break for Denmark, helped Brentford demolish Chelsea in a 4-1 win at Stamford Bridge.
An electric start to the second half saw Rudiger's goal of the season contender put the blues in front, before three goals in ten minutes saw Brentford turn the game on its head. The Bees' fourth goal late on put the game to bed to earn them their first win over Chelsea since 1939.
The first half was largely uneventful. Toney should've done better when Chelsea Mendy misplaced his pass, but the Brentford top scorer skied his lobbed effort. Brentford where largely untroubled bar Ziyech's long range effort that tested David Raya.
Chelsea took the lead just after half time through an unlikely long ranged scorer in Rudiger. We are used to him scoring the odd header, but not 30 yard worldies. However, Brentford's response was good, and quick, and in style. Mbuemo teed up Janelt who struck the ball sweetly into the top corner. And Janelt was soon joined on the scoresheet by his fellow Dane Christian Eriksen. A fast break on the counter attack from Mbuemo, left Eriksen in pace in the middle who made no mistake from six yards out. A golden moment for the midfielder who suffered a heart attack just seven months ago. Against all odds, moments later Janelt once again scored to make it 3-1, who despite all the plaudits for Eriksen put in a stellar performance. Chelsea's miseries were then further compounded when substitute Wissa turned the ball home with his first touch of the game.
Defeat for Chelsea now leaves them 14 points of leaders Man City, and you must say with just nine games to play puts any hopes of winning the Premier League beyond reach. After so many troubles of field, it seems they are beginning to take there toll on the blues. They are however still in the Champions League and the FA Cup where they play Real Madrid on Wednesday and Crystal Palace respectively.
Tuchel labelled the performance as 'untypical' of his Chelsea team and explained how Chelsea were uncharacteristically 'sloppy in defending'.
Meanwhile, Brentford's win leaves Thomas Frank's side 11 points clear of the relegation zone and their 33 points will now surely be enough for them to regain their Premier League status for next season. All the praise will go to Eriksen who also scored last time out at Stamford Bridge for Tottenham, but his was his fellow Dane Janelt who really stole the show. Next up for Brentford they host West Ham next weekend.
Frank labelled the Chelsea win as 'the best result of the season', in contrast to the Chelsea boss Frank praised the Bees' players character in the game.
