Man United got the better of Leeds as United's midfield maestro Paul Pogba continued his fine summer form. The midfield duo between Pogba and Fernandes proved a fine pairing as the Frenchman teed Fernandes up for 2 of his 3 goals. However, questions where raised regarding United's form having won just 1 of their final 7 games (in all competitions) at the end of the season. United's third acquisition of the window was confirmed just before the game as centre back Varane joined, with summer signings Sancho and Heaton both on the Red Devils bench. For Leeds, they look to build on their 9th place finish the previous season and looked to continue their form of 4 wins on the bounce in the league.
Despite missing an early 1 on 1, Pogba rediscovered his form as his no look ball found Fernandes as United's top scorer for last season opened his account for the new season. An early setback for Leeds saw them click more into gear as they saw half chances stopped by De Gea.
However, it was the 2nd half that really sparked both teams into life as Leeds continued their resurgence as they equalised through a stunning strike from Luke Ayling. But it was a nightmare few minutes for Leeds as a game full of special goals continued, the first from Greenwood as an exquisite through ball from Pogba found him as he added a goal to his excellent performance, before Pogba completed a hattrick of assists to tee up Fernandes for his 2nd. Leeds had more trouble when Lindelof's fine long ball found Fernandes who scored to make it 4-1 and rounded of his hattrick. A ruthless and excellent United performance wasn't finished until Pogba once again found Fred who managed to get in on the action.
Elation for United:
An excellent United performance shows just what United are capable of; even without new signings Varane and Sancho as they visit Southampton next up. Is this a sign of what's to come?
Defensive frailties for Leeds:
For Leeds, a replica of their 6-2 loss at Old Trafford last season, as they again show signs of their defensive struggles from last season. Up next, they look to bounce back at Elland Road against Everton.
