After a difficult 2021, Cullen made an emphatic darting entrance as he beat Dave Chisnall to win his first televised major tournament.

The tournament features the 24 best ranked darts players, with the top 8 already through to the second round. In the first round, Whitlock who only featured due to Danny Noppert’s withdrawal from the competition, stunned Van Duijvenbode to advance to the second round where he would face world champion Peter Wright.

And he created one of the upsets of the night as the Aussie raced into a 9-5 lead, before surviving a scare and advancing 10 legs to 8. The Wizard punished Wright who once again couldn’t resist a change of darts which ultimately cost him. Elsewhere, another shock came as eventual winner Joe Cullen bulldozed his way past 2017 runner up Gary Anderson with a 10-1 win.

In the Quarter-Finals, reigning Masters winner; Jonny Clayton continued his fight to reclaim his title as he beat fellow Welshman and world number 1 Gerwyn Price. The Rockstar, Joe Cullen once again prevailed in the Quarter-Final as he beat five time Masters winner Van Gerwen to keep his hopes of a first televised competition win alive.

The Semi-Finals saw Dave Chisnall dispatch reigning Masters and Premier League winner, Jonny Clayton 11-6 as the 2016 runner up sought his first PDC title. In the other, Cullen managed to fend of the Special One Jose De Sousa to advance to the final. The final saw a neck and neck affair where despite being 5-2 up then 8-5 up, Chisnall pushed Cullen all the way as the Rockstar finally nailed his 11th match dart in double 18 to win the Masters and £60,000 which puts him 11th in the PDC Order of Merit. The Rockstar was then serenated by chants of 'There's only one Joe Cullen' before being presented with the Masters trophy.

An emotional Joe Cullen was joined by his father as they celebrated winning a first televised event as he also earned himself a place in the Premier League where he is joint by Jonny Clayton, Gerwyn Price, James Wade, Peter Wright, Michael Smith, Van Gerwen and Gary Anderson as they compete in a new mini tournament format.
