Gareth Bale's hattrick condemns the Blades to defeat

Gareth rolled back the years in Spurs' win against Sheffield United to pile yet more misery on the already relegated Sheffield United side. Ryan Mason took charge of just his 3rd Spurs game, the 29 year old and his team looking to put behind the disappointment of last weeks cup final defeat, and they did so emphatically.

A Sheffield United win in their last outing against Brighton may have sparked a hint of confidence in such a detrimental season as they marshalled Spurs' attack well in the opening 30 minutes, restricting Spurs to a Son half chance and dealing with a Harry Kane as Basham cleared off the line. Conversely, Sheffield United struggled attacking, the main struggle of theirs this season being the lowest scorers with just 17, as crosses only seemed to find Spurs defenders. The Blades defensive resilience soon crumbled as Aurier floated the ball into Bale who flicked over Ramsdale. Spurs possession and domination gifted them a 1-0 lead at half time however, Sheffield United where still in it.

Just 5 minutes into the 2nd half the Blades were handed another warning sign as Son's strike thudded the net only to be ruled out for offside. Despite a positive start to the 2nd half for the Blades, they soon found their deficit doubled as on the hour mark, Son teed up Bale on the counter and Bale struck the net for a 2-0 lead. Bale soon completed his hattrick as within 10 minutes of his second, he was once again played in by Aurier and found the bottom corner. Son soon completed the scoring as his 77th minute strike proved to precise for Ramsdale.

Son (16 goals, 10 assists) joined fellow Spurs striker Kane and Bruno Fernandes as one of three Premier League players to both score and assist 10+ in the Premier League this season.

Sheffield United have lost 27 of their 34 Premier League games this season, the most the Blades have ever lost in a league campaign.

Spurs move to 5th as they revive hopes of European football next season as they visit Elland Road next time out.

For the Blades, the heavy loss once again serves as evidence of the need for immense improvement next season as they host Crystal Palace next time out.
